Kollywood movie Dada starring Kavin and Aparna Das in the lead roles has now made its digital debut on Amazon Prime Video. The movie is directed by Ganesh K Babu, and let’s see how it is.
Manikandan (Kavin) and Sindhu (Aparna Das) are college sweethearts. Sindhu gets pregnant, which makes Manikandan and Sindhu’s parents abandon them. Manikandan asks Sindhu to get aborted, to which the latter doesn’t agree. With no choice left, Manikandan secures a job in a warehouse, and the lovebirds start living together. Manikandan works his fingers to the bone to manage Sindhu’s medical expenses. During this, conflicts start developing between both, and it goes to an extreme situation one day. What is that extreme situation? What happened next? How did that situation change Sindhu and Manikandan’s lives? Watch the movie to know the answers.
Plus Points:
The movie has a simple plot that focuses on basic human emotions and relations. The director presents these emotions in a lovely and heartful manner without trying hard to impress. The characterizations of the lead pair are well-written, making us root for them from the word go. The story is well-established initially, and we are nicely taken into the world of Manikandan and Sindhu.
The conflict point between the lead pair is strong enough, and this crucial scene is nicely presented. The conversations are simple in nature. Kavin, as Manikandan, enlivens the film with his mature performance. He is superb in the emotional part and equally good in funny scenes. A scene where Kavin suggests his colleague not to commit suicide in a casual manner depicts the ease in his acting.
The male protagonist’s journey and transformation are nicely showcased. Aparna Das, the girl who played an important role in Vijay’s Beast, arrests the audience with her captivating performance in Dada. She looks cute is truly one of the biggest advantages of Dada. Her acting during an important scene in the first hour and in the climax portions is too good.
The movie also has got a decent dosage of comedy at places. VTV Ganesh, who played a brief yet impactful role, tickles the funny bones. A scene of him with the protagonist is hilarious, and there is some magic about the veteran actor. Pradeep Antony, as the subordinate of Kavin, does well, and the makers infuse nice humor through his character. The others are good in their respective roles.
Minus Points:
The movie becomes a bit slow at times, and the second half could have been still better. As the first half is filled with good emotions and drama, the expectations about the second half will certainly be high, but this part is comparatively not that great.
A few scenes are very conveniently written in the film, and this aspect could have been handled properly. The song over the end could have been avoided to keep the film short and sweet. The movie becomes predictable at times, and hence the impact reduces a bit.
Technical Aspects:
Jen Martin did a compelling job, as the songs and background score are pleasant throughout. The cinematography by Ezhil Arasu is fair, as the frames look easy on the eye. The editing is okay. The production values are adequate. The dialogues are nicely written.
Coming to director Ganesh K Babu, he did a decent job with the film. The way he brought in good drama and emotions in the first hour was too good. He also imbued nice humor in the movie. But as mentioned earlier, the second half doesn’t match the first hour though there was scope for more drama. Nonetheless, Ganesh manages to extract good performances from the artists, and the climax portions are dealt well.
On the whole, Dada has a simple plot that has been told in a natural manner. The exhilarating performances of Kavin and Aparna Das and the emotions are the film’s strengths. The movie’s first half is good, but the second hour slows down. Those who are looking for sensible dramas can watch Dada this weekend.

Dada review: Kavin, Aparna Das stand out in this rollicking emotional drama filled with heartfelt moments
The conflicts in the film aren't completely new, but the manner in which they are entertainingly presented with the right mix of emotions deserves praise
A still from Dada

Story: A young couple, who is in a live-in relationship, part ways unexpectedly after they became parents. One of them brings up the child without knowing where his partner is and moves on with a heavy heart. They meet after four years in an unanticipated circumstance. Quite unaware of each other's marital status, they spend some time with each other along with mutual friends, though the two aren't ready to mingle freely with one another. What has fate in store for them?
Review: Debutant Ganesh K Babu's Dada wastes no time in setting the plot of Dada and establishing its characters. It begins as the story of a young couple, Manigandan (Kavin) and Sindhu (Aparna Das), who are in a live-in relationship. They are still college students and are yet to figure out how they want to lead their lives in future.
What keeps them going is the unconditional love they have for each other. But all hell breaks loose when Sindhu becomes pregnant. Mani asks her to abort, but the former insists on bringing up the child. As if this isn't enough, the financial crisis further worsens the relationship between the two.
After a few unexpected situations, they part ways post the pregnancy owing to pressure from parents. Years later, they meet each other during an unforeseen scenario, but the two of them realize that they have moved on despite one of them donning a parent's hat responsibly.
The strength of Dada lies in relatable emotions and neatly etched character designs. The sequences and conflicts in the film aren't completely new, but the manner in which they are entertainingly presented with the right mix of emotions deserves praise. The way in which relationships between a few characters are depicted is full of life and leaves you teary-eyed and happy. Some of the sequences in a huge office and the bonding between employees are realistic and amusing.
The performance of Kavin is the icing on the cake while Aparna essays her character quite convincingly. Their flawless chemistry is one of the highlights of the movie. Pradeep Antony and VTV Ganesh stand out in the movie with their timely expressions and funny one-liners. Harish Kumar impresses yet again with his earnest presence. Bhagyaraj, Elan, Fouziee and Aishwarya make their presence felt in crucial scenes.
Jen Martin's music elevates some of the heartwarming episodes, but could have been better in a few sequences. Ezhil Arasu's efficient cinematography lends the required mood to the core emotions and helps the audience travel along with the lead characters' woes. Kathiresh Alagesan's crisp editing is to the point and is devoid of unnecessary scenes and shots.
On the downside, the strained relationship between the lead characters and their respective parents required more emphasis. A huge revelation in the latter half at a crucial point needed more impact in terms of emotional display and presentation.
However, these minor flaws do not deter the film's overall storytelling pattern and offer a neat package to viewers as a wholesome entertainer.
Verdict: Dada's target seems to be young audience, but the right packaging of emotions and instantly likeable characters are adequate enough to attract all sections of audience.
