The company was established by dairy farmers in the area to share marketing and boost production in order to sell their products. The company later changed its name in 1944 to Bega Co-Operative Society Limited as they continued to grow and expand its range of products and markets. In 1985, Bega Co-Operative established an alliance with Bonlac Foods which promoted the marketing of Bega Cheese products beyond the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales which eventually resulted in the exporting of over 60 million units of Bega Cheese to approx. 40 countries. This includes exporting products to the Middle East, South East Asia and North Asia. In 2007, Bega Co-Operative acquired 70 per cent ownership in Tatura Milk Industries which aided in generating record profits of $18 million for the year ending in June 2007. In 2008, the Co-Operative was remodelled into a company and was renamed Bega Cheese Limited after it was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. To this day, the company is still currently supplied by local farmers in Bega, where its headquarters is also located. In 2010, Bega Cheese secured a 15 per cent ownership interest in Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory Company., and in the following year secured the remaining 30 per cent ownership of Tatura Milk Industries. In April 2012, Bega Cheese Limited secured a contract with Coles to produce Coles branded cheese for supermarkets across Australia, however lost the contract to its major rival, Murray Goulburn Devondale in December 2016. Bega then secured a contract with Woolworth supermarkets to produce the supermarket’s own branded cheese. Bega Cheese Limited then became the largest cheese packing and processing company in the Southern Hemisphere. Bega Cheese Limited supplies and distributes its products which are then sold by fast food outlets, supermarkets, restaurants, and food service companies around the globe. They supply cheddar cheese products as well as other cheeses such as mozzarella, cream cheese, milk powders and milk concentrates. Bega Cheese Limited is dedicated to supporting sustainable and productive dairy farms in Australia. Their focus is to work with suppliers and local farmers to identify and implement methods to improve the efficiency, productivity and long-term sustainability of the company. Analysis of Financial Report Data Profitability Return on Shareholder’s Equity (ROE) The profitability ratios for Bega Cheese Limited shows a decrease in shareholder’s equity from 2015 to 2014, however improves in 2016. In 2015 comparative to 2014, the ROE declines to 3 per cent from 22 per cent. A $1 investment from shareholder’s equity retuned 3 cents of earnings available for distribution, relative to 22 cents for $1 of investments in 2014. However, in 2016 comparative to 2015, the ROE increased to 8 per cent from 3 per cent. For every $1 invested by shareholder’s in 2016 returned 8 cents available for distribution. Return on Assets (ROA) Bega Cheese Limited generated 3 cents of profit per dollar of investments in assets in 2015 comparative to 18 cents per dollar in 2014. This shows us that the company lost money both in assets and in revenue for the year ending June 2015. However, Bega Cheese Limited generated 7 cents of profit per dollar of investments in 2016, suggesting that the company increased its profitability and asset efficiency in 2016 relative to 2015. This shows us that in 2016, the entity was able to successfully increase its conversion of sales revenue into profit and generate more income. Gross Profit Margin (GPM) In terms of profitability, Bega Cheese Limited’s gross profit margin shows that the entity may have reduced the price of their products in 2015 relative to 2014. The gross profit margin increased slightly with $1 of sales revenue in 2015 resulting in 10 cents of gross profit, comparative to 11 cents in 2014. This means that the cost of sales has accounted for 89 cents of each sales dollar in 2015. However, the gross profit margin was higher in 2016 with $1 of sales revenue resulting in 12 cents of gross profit. This shows that the cost of sales in 2016 has accounted for 87 cents of each sales dollar, comparative to 89 cents in 2015, which suggests that the entity’s prices decreased in 2016 relative to 2015 and 2014. The change in gross profit margin may have also resulted from a change of products being sold by Bega Cheese Limited. Net Profit Margin (NPM) Bega Cheese Limited converted $1 of sales revenue into 9 cents of profit in 2014, which significantly decreased to 1 cents in 2015. The entity would have been dissatisfied with this weakened profit margin. This suggests that the entity may have spent more on expenses than generating revenue from sales during the year ending June 2015. However, Bega Cheese Limited converted $1 of sales revenue into 3 cents of profit in 2016 which increased from 2015. Efficiency Inventory Turnover Period In 2015, Bega Cheese Limited took on average 70 days to sell its inventory items, 3 days more than the average days taken in 2014. As a high-volume company that sells perishable inventory, the entity relies on turning over its inventory quickly to ensure its inventories do not become obsolete/out of date. The average amount of days it took for Bega Cheese limited to sell its inventory items in 2016 is 2 days less than 2015, taking only 68 days. In 2015, Bega Cheese Limited funded every $1 of assets with 44 cents of debt in 2016, compared to 43 cents of debt in 2014 and 2015. By funding approx. 40 per cent of the assets with debt reflects a medium to low reliance on debt suggests that the entity exposure to financial risk is medium to low. Conclusion and Summary Over the reporting period, Bega Cheese Limited has been able to display its ability to overcome and take advantage of producing large volumes of inventory in a sustainable and efficient manner utilizing its ownership in multiple companies and factories across Australia to distribute its inventories internationally to approx. 40 countries across the globe. In order to be able to succeed the growing market, Bega Cheese Limited has had to rely on its assets as well as its debts to finance its growing company into the international market, whilst also competing with its top competitor Murry Goulburn Cooperative Co. Ltd. After analysis the financial performance of Bega Cheese Limited, it is evident that the equity and return on assets in 2016 is 13% and 10% lower than that of 2014. However, the sales revenue increased by 11% ($126,575) with 5% less profits, suggesting that the entity had more outgoing expenses in 2016 compared to 2014, and/or it decreased the cost of its inventory items. In the short term, decreasing the cost of its inventory items would benefit in the competitive market by persuading customers to purchase Bega products at a lesser cost compared to competitive products. However, in the long-term reducing the cost of its inventory items would result in less revenue being generated for the entity with its expenses and accounts payable remaining the same or increasing as the entity grows. This would show the result of increasing sales, but not generating sufficient revenue to produce further profit. In the medium-term future, the financial position of Bega Cheese Limited appears positive in terms of generating sales revenue as it is continuing to increase, however, offering lower inventory prices could have a negative impact on the entity for current and future shareholders if the entity doesn’t produce sufficient profits for the company.
