According to the NHC, a total $108 billion in damages was estimated, with 38 percent of the cost being from insured losses 23 percent of the cost from insured losses due to floods.

The Watch Right after Hurricane Maria passed through Puerto Rico, I called every family member that lives on the Island. Out of all of my family, I only managed to talk with two people, my Godmother Eileen and my Aunt Lucy. Both of them told me that they were alright, but their furniture was strongly damaged as an outcome of Maria. While I was talking to my godmother about the hurricane what she told me truly amazed me. My godmother, Eileen, is around the age of sixty-two-years-old with short curly brown hair. She told me that for Hurricane Maria she went to stay at her apartment in Isla Verde, Puerto Rico that has such a marvelous view that anyone can spot El Morro of San Juan. She told me that her apartment is relatively large, with three bedrooms, one full kitchen, and two full bathrooms. When the hurricane began to enter, she knew to stay away from her glass windows and doors, considering she knew that they might break and cause her harm. My godmother took an air mattress into her master bathroom as it was the only windowless area in the entire apartment. She slept in her bathroom for the beginning of the hurricane. Then, she was woken up to a loud crash coming from outside her bathroom, as well as water all over the floor. When she opened her bathroom door, the master bedroom was a mess. The glass windows of her room were broken due to the strong gusts of wind that were being created by the hurricane. My godmother described the scene as "if someone threw a grenade of water and glass into my room." She knew that if her room was ravaged then the rest of her apartment was also terribly damaged too. Admitting she knew she should not leave the bathroom, she still did for the simple reason that she felt like she needed to protect something, but she was not sure what it was. She began to walk outside the bathroom, and with every step that she took, the glass that was all over the floor would break. When she reached the door of her bedroom, she could hear that the hurricane was still exceedingly strong and active. She described as if there was a war happening inside of her apartment.
