I see a lot of negative responses about communication and advising. I don't understand this. I have had great experience with my advisor. When there is a question the advisor is prompt and either answers the question directly or puts me in touch with the person who can. Communication with Professors has been amazing. My experience as a student and someone who has worked for almost a decade in the field of higher education has taught me that a University experience is dependent on what you put into it. So many of the comments on this thread really reflect more of the learners attitudes towards education more than the institution. If you were to attend an Ive League or any other school you would face some issues with communication and this is partly due to the fact that the expectation of any program is that you are educated and motivated enough to find answers when you need them. It's 2022 and access to information is easier now than any other time in history. Higher education overall is not designed to baby you. If anything it is to teach you how to teach yourself. The higher the degree the more onus there is on the student to be independent. This is an online degree program, you should expect that you will have to do some leg-work. I have friends in many institutions that are in the top 1% that face the same issues that are mentioned in many of the negative comments. The difference is the attitude and individual motivation of the student. Calsouthern has a lot to offer for those who are able to apply themselves and commit to doing the work. The school is accredited and transparent. I recently had a question regarding licensure and the advisor literally initiated a conversation with the Board of Psychology to find answers. The only weakness I have found are the library resources, but this is also the case at many institutions. At the end of the day your education is in your own hands and is what you make of it. Expecting a professor, advisor or any representative to be at your beckon call (regardless of the institution) is rather lazy and unreasonable. Those that have had negative experiences would have had the same experiences regardless of whether they attended Oxford or a vocational school. Gas lighting is usually the expression of someone that can not take responsibility for their own actions and that is what I am reading throughout these reviews. Don't be discouraged by what you are seeing in these comments. I am a student at CalSouthern a long with a lot of great classmates who come from diverse backgrounds, and yes, there are those that only put 5 or 10% into their program and those are the one's that are always complaining. You can see it in the discussion posts. At the end of the day your education is what you make of it. You don't like a bad grade, you don't like that someone didn't do your research for you, you don't like that you didn't read the catalogue to understand the requirements of the Uni? That's not on the institution. You feel that your advisor didn't "reach out" or isn't responding? Request a new advisor... I have never had that kind of experience. I have had two advisors and they have been absolutely amazing. I have had professors that I have had great connections with and even after the class they will check in and see how I'm doing. They have a wealth of educational and professional background and are always open to share their experiences and even their struggles. So I would HIGHLY recommend CalSouthern. As far as the school being, "only concerned about money".... This is laughable.. Institutions make money that's just the reality of any business whether it is education or retail. I have worked with Institutions in higher education that would blow your mind when it comes to getting money out of you. Textbooks, parking tags, activity fees, class notes, club fees, high prices on campus based diners or cafeterias, even down to ridiculous fees for transcripts. Calsouthern, will refer you to sites that sell textbooks but you are free to get them wherever you want. The fees are straight forward and are even less than most institutions. I have attended Institutions that actually required that you buy printed copies of class notes for $30-$50... These were prestigious institutions. Calsouthern has never charged anything like this. Overall, I spent several years looking for an accredited university with a good online program. I moved overseasd 12 years ago and have had limited access to Doctoral programs. When I finally found this University I had my concerns as anyone would looking at an online program for the first time. Calsouthern, for me, has been and continues to be a great experience. I started as just tipping my toes in there, but I ended up taking my PsyD degree. It was rigorous and worth it. Downfall, the academic advisors were in and out ( resigned or something). I thought, hey I want to read some of the reviews. I read about all sorts of positive and negative issues. In some cases people who had complaints seemed to be dismissing situational factors like covid or even personal choice of others, meaning that blaming a school for changing a case manager or for that employee leaving when we have no ... I read reviews where someone attended school for over 10 years made comments about something shady and provided no concrete examples which in psychology is not really helpful for correcting behaviors. My all time favorite is the review that made an appeal for negativity and to not attend using the psychological term "known in psychology as "gaslighting"". I have not found that one in the DSM 5 yet. Please be objective and look at your own goals not some online postings to make choices. Or if you are looking at posts, be objective and read both sides. The school for me did exactly what it was supposed to do. Regionally accredited university that provided the necessary educational requirements for licensure as a psychologist in the state of California, online and for a fair price that I was able to pay over time without interest. That was the deal they made me when I started and they kept it. All the rest is background noise. If they moved, people left the University, or if they changed platforms, these are are changes that might occur in any business. What is the deal you want from this and make your choices based on what is right for you. The education I received advanced my career, challenged me, provided what was needed to register with the state to become a psychologist and not one person has ever said, you are not a doctor because your school sucked. I met good people in administration, my cohort and other students who are still attending. I have met people in my industry who also went to the school who we have a common bond. I was able to keep my own pace, work remotely and did not have to work with others unless I chose to. To me attending classes in person is not worthy of the time I have left on this earth when I can get the same thing online. By the way I told the person I would attend again if I had to do it all over again.

A Capella grad, now online instructor, I can provide perspective from both sides of "the desk." Capella is a real and challenging program. Online study is not for everyone, particularly at the doctoral level. It requires a significant amount of self-motivation and drive. The dissertation alone is a bear of a life consuming project that prospective students should thoroughly understand before undertaking. Of the complaints I've read, sound like my students who want the degree without the work. One ... Read More such student recently conveyed that quality work couldn't be submitted on time because priorities had been set: 1) Family; 2) Job; 3) Church. Sorry, but if your education can't crack the top three, you won't succeed at ANY program. While I feel the education was excellent - including the practical skills of clinical practice - there are some unavoidable obstacles. Learning those practical skills cannot be done solely online. The clinical psych program is more correctly a hybrid. Travel to a series of "residencies" is required. Beyond Capella, clinical psychologists require three years of supervised practice - practicum, internship, post-doc residency. As a "national campus," a distance program cannot offer the sort of support conventional programs do (e.g. an associated teaching hospital for practicum). Internship is a nationally competitive process that already has an only 75% placement rate - some students from top-tier programs don't get placed - and most all require relocation for a nearly minimum wage income. Same for post-doc, but with a slightly higher income. Then there is the licensing exam which all but requires completing a prep course, at your own expense with no institutional support. Finally, the lack of APA accreditation, automatically disqualifies you from licensing in 1/3 of the US. (There is a significant status quo problem with APA that speaks more to it as an organization than the quality of distance delivered programs.) Bottom line - this is a solid program which some larger issues that are navigable IF a prospective student goes in with eyes WIDE open.

Liberty University’s Ph.D. in Psychology – Industrial/Organization Psychology is a 60-credit-hour degree program that is delivered entirely online. Dr. Rasbury: Our students are assessed through their classes and through exams. Students take a CRE in their first year, which is a clinical readiness exam. We have a CPE, which is a clinical proficiency exam, which students take in their second year, where we assess your ability to write clinically and answer questions about cases in your practicum. Students are assigned to a faculty advisor who will be with each student for the entire time of your program: five years. You meet with your faculty advisor that’s assigned to you at orientation and that adviser will follow you through your program. You meet with them on a regular basis, at least quarterly if not more.

The main difference between a doctorate of psychology (PsyD) program and a doctorate of philosophy (PhD) program is the training emphasis. 

PsyD programs are focused on training graduates to become clinicians and focus heavily on clinical work. A PhD program in clinical psychology, by contrast, prepares graduates to become scientist-practitioners and places more emphasis on research.

In addition to being a benchmark for quality instruction, some states require that psychology professionals graduate from an APA-accredited program in order to pursue licensure to practice. 

At the time of this writing, however, the APA does not accredit online-only PhD doctoral programs , stating, “Some accredited programs may offer online courses or other content via distance education in an adjunctive role. These courses cannot represent a substantial nature of program content and certain classes (e.g., practicum) are not considered appropriate for this instructional method. Any online courses in accredited programs should be noted as such in public materials.” 

As a result, APA accreditation generally only occurs for hybrid or blended programs that include a minimum threshold of on-campus or in-person requirements. 

A prospective clinical psychology PhD applicant must understand how the APA figures into their state’s licensure requirements and whether or not the universities without APA recognition help students to gain the skills necessary for licensure.

Walden University offers a hybrid online/in-person PhD in clinical psychology that prepares students to become practitioners, faculty members, consultants, administrators, or researchers. Walden’s blended learning approach prepares students to qualify to sit for psychology licensing exams by meeting the academic requirements stipulated by some state psychology boards. 

Students enrolled in this program will be expected to complete at least two of the four required four-day residencies in a face-to-face format, and will also need to complete one academic year in residence in the sixth through ninth quarters of the program. The year in residence program combines online coursework with face-to-face experiences in Minneapolis. 

Students enrolled in the 163-credit program can choose to pursue a general program, or can choose to specialize in forensic psychology, health, industrial and organizational psychology, or teaching. Coursework in the program includes psychopathology from a clinical perspective, interpersonal psychotherapy, psychology and social change, and cognitive and affective bases of behavior. After completing a two-course practicum, students are also expected to complete four internship courses that help them to gain 2,000 supervised clinical clock hours, 900 of which must be direct client contact hours. GRE/MAT scores are not required to apply to Walden.

Fielding Graduate University (Hybrid)

Fielding Graduate University offers a hybrid online and in-person clinical psychology PhD program that aims to create a more humane, just, and sustainable world by creating programming accessible to students from underrepresented populations and by graduating students who bring values of social and ecological justice to their work. 

Fielding offers the only distributed learning program accredited by the APA. Students enrolled in the 179-credit program earn a pathway master’s after the first two years of study and can choose a concentration in forensic psychology, health psychology, neuropsychology, or social justice and diversity. 

On-campus requirements in this program include a weeklong orientation and two weeklong residencies in the first two years of the program. Some concentrations and seminars require additional on-campus presence as well. Students are also required to complete 600 residency hours, 150 hours of clinical experience or one internship rotation/150 hours of community service focused on serving an underserved population, and a 1,520-hour/19-credit minimum clinical practicum. 

Coursework in the program includes cognitive assessment, history and systems of psychology, biological bases of behavior, and multicultural psychology. No GRE scores are required to apply, and students without a master’s degree can also apply to Fielding.

Saybrook University (Hybrid)

Saybrook University offers a hybrid online/in-person PhD in clinical psychology program that provides the coursework requirements to become a licensed clinical psychologist in 13 states. 

Students enrolled in the program (103-109 credits entering with a bachelor’s degree or 100-106 credits entering with a master’s degree in psychology or a related field) can enroll in a specialization, though it is not required. These include advanced psychological assessment, applied psychophysiology, complex trauma and the healing process, consciousness spirituality integrative health, creativity studies; existential and humanistic psychology, or jungian studies. There are other specializations from other degree programs also open to clinical psychology students.

On-campus requirements for the program include a two-day residential orientation and two five-day residential conferences per year. Students enrolled in the program are expected to complete a 600-hour minimum practicum over two semesters and a 12- to 24-month internship with a minimum of 1,500 clinical training hours. 

Coursework in the program includes ethics and laws in psychotherapy and behavioral science research, the psychology of multiculturalism in North America, social psychology, and integrative health psychology: the application of psychological concepts and tools to health. 

Students who enroll in the Saybrook program with an earned bachelor’s degree can earn a master’s degree on the way to the PhD. Although Saybrook is not an APA-accredited program, the program can be adjusted to meet APA equivalency in the student’s intended state of practice. GRE/MAT scores are not required to apply, but can be submitted to strengthen an application.
